From July 12 to 24, 2017, Rio de Janeiro will host the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2017), the first IMO edition to be held in Brazil. During this period we will receive the most talented young students from more than 100 countries around the world, who will come together to solve challenging mathematical problems in a friendly competition.
The history of the IMO goes back to 1959, when its first edition was held in Romania. Since then, the competition has provided a stimulus for mathematics, offering a great opportunity for the creative exchange of ideas and experiences among students from many different cultures.
Hosted by Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), the IMO 2017 will be held jointly with the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2018, as part of the Biennium of Mathematics 2017–2018 Gomes de Souza, an initiative that aims to disseminate mathematical and scientific knowledge throughout society.
Nominated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Rio de Janeiro provides an exceptional location for the 58th IMO. Breathtaking landscapes, world-famous beaches, brand new infrastructure, and its hospitable people — the cariocas — make the city a unique and spectacular setting for such a significant event.

The Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) (National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) is a world-renowned mathematical sciences research institute that plays a leading role in Brazil and Latin America. Created in 1952, IMPA has a mission that includes undertaking high-level research in pure and applied mathematics, training new researchers, disseminating mathematical culture and knowledge in all of its forms, and developing projects to improve mathematical teaching at all levels.
The Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática (OBM) (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad) is an annual national mathematical competition for elementary, secondary, and undergraduate students, whether from public or private institutions. Created in 1979, it currently operates as a partnership between IMPA and the Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM) (Brazilian Mathematical Society), with the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) (Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)), as a supporting institution. The main objectives of OBM are to stimulate the study of mathematics in academia, to identify talented young mathematicians and encourage them to pursue a scientific career, particularly in mathematics, and to select and train students to represent Brazil in international mathematical competitions, such as the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), among others. Additionally, OBM promotes several regional and state mathematical tournaments within Brazil.
The Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas (OBMEP) (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools), was created in 2005. With federal government backing, the competition is organized by IMPA with the collaboration of the SBM. The initiative aims to motivate elementary and secondary school students to study mathematics, improve basic education, and foster social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge. The competition reaches more than 19 million students from public schools nationwide each year.
In 2015, The Brazilian Government sanctioned Law 2496, which sets the years 2017 and 2018 as the Biennium of Mathematics 2017 – 2018 Gomes de Souza. The date was created in commemoration of two major international mathematical events hosted for the very first time in Brazil: The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2017) and the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018). The initiative is a tribute to Joaquim Gomes de Souza (1829 – 1864), also known as “Souzinha,” a Brazilian mathematician who is considered one of the pioneers in the study of mathematics in Brazil.
Hosting two major mathematical events in Brazil in such a short period is a historical opportunity to foster and disseminate mathematical and scientific knowledge throughout society. Additionally, the occasion is a unique opportunity to develop existing projects and create new programs and research in mathematics within Brazil.
